Its content includes parts three and four, which set out the aspects to consider regarding stairs, stepladders, guardrails, and fixed ladders.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The information contained in these sections of UNE EN ISO 14122 tells us the design, manufacturing, and installation criteria for these safety elements.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today we will focus on the existing models according to access needs and how to install them.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Types of Access Ladders According to the Standard<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The standard includes different types of ladders. We install the most suitable ones depending on the available space, the access to be created, and how heavily the system will be used.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What we can do is summarize the types of ladders into two models:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Vertical ladders.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Inclined ladders.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Within the two models mentioned, we can find different variants depending on the specific needs of each type of installation.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We will also find different design and installation requirements depending on the model selected, for which we will need to consult the parts of the standard mentioned.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Do You Install a Ladder in Accordance with UNE EN ISO 14122?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As we have mentioned throughout our posts, before installing any type of safety system, we first carry out the corresponding risk assessment to ensure that the selected safety system fits the specific situation, thereby guaranteeing a safe work or access environment.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That said, to install ladders correctly, we will take the following points into consideration:<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Assessing the Environment and Selecting the Type of Ladder<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As we have said, before installation we carry out the necessary risk assessment. Once the data has been collected, we choose one type of ladder or another, and to do so we need to ask ourselves:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Type of access<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Space available for installing the system<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Obstacles to be bridged<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Frequency of ladder use<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Verifying the Right Dimensions and Materials<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once the first step is done, we move on to defining the dimensions of the ladder and the material it will be made of. The standard sets out a series of criteria to take into account when manufacturing them, such as:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Maximum height between landings<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Minimum and maximum tread dimensions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Guardrail heights<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Material resistance to loads and corrosion<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Special attention must be paid to the material selected depending on the environment where it will be installed. This helps us avoid premature deterioration and ensures a safe and effective system.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Platforms and Landings<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another point to keep in mind is that at certain heights, access ladders need rest platforms or landings.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These elements must have enough space for users to stop, turn, or even step off the ladder.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The standard specifies the technical requirements for these elements.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Installing Additional Fall Protection Systems<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this case, we do not limit ourselves to installing the ladder; we also provide the system with the necessary safety. Depending on the type of ladder and its dimensions, we will also install:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Protective hoops, safety cages, or vertical lifelines on vertical access ladders 3 m or more in height.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Protective guardrails on inclined or fixed ladders when the height difference exceeds 500 mm.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Fixing the Ladders<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once all of the above has been defined, we proceed to fix the ladders to the surfaces where they will be installed.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Depending on the material where the anchoring will be done, we will opt for one type of fixing element or another, such as mechanical anchors, chemical anchors, or others.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once anchored, we make sure there is no vibration or movement that needs to be eliminated by adding other elements such as support braces, etc.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once installed, it is advisable to carry out load tests or visual inspections in order to ensure the system is correctly placed.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Maintenance and Periodic Inspection<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally, the UNE EN ISO 14122 standard tells us that we must carry out periodic inspections to ensure the system and its components are in good condition and to help us detect any possible deterioration or damage early. The elements to be inspected are:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Fixings<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Structure<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Treads<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Protections<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Choosing access ladders correctly so that they meet all the technical specifications set out in the UNE EN ISO 14122 standard, together with a proper risk assessment and careful selection of materials and anchors, will result in a safe system for workers or access users.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Investing in these resources is not only a legal matter; it is a responsible decision by companies to ensure workers&#8217; safety and save lives.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To that end, <a href=\"https:\/\/ypsossafety.com\/contacto-ypsos\/\">we recommend carrying out all of these steps with properly qualified personnel<\/a>, from data collection to system maintenance, ensuring that use and the passage of time do not turn a safety system into a hazard.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The UNE EN ISO 14122 standard provides guidelines on safety in different work environments or access points.
