Protection against falls from a height. Anchor devices. Requirements and testing.”

As we said, this standard specifies the requirements to be met, test methods, instructions for use, marking, and installation of the various anchor devices, classified by configuration as type A, B, C, D, and E.

EN 795 Type A: Anchor devices that remain stationary during use and require a structural anchor or a fixing element to be attached to the structure.

EN 795 Type B: Stationary anchor devices that do not require a structural anchor or a fixing element to the structure.

EN 795 Type C: Anchor devices that use a flexible anchor line that deviates no more than 15 degrees from the horizontal.

EN 795 Type D: Anchor devices that use a rigid anchor line that deviates no more than 15 degrees from the horizontal.

EN 795 Type E: Dead weight anchor devices usable on horizontal surfaces

Today we will focus on type D anchor devices, which use a rigid anchor line commonly known as a rigid track or rail.

What Are 795D Lifelines?

EN 795 D rigid horizontal anchor rails consist of an element or set of elements containing one or more structural anchors that connect the building to the rigid rail.

The rigid track houses a mobile anchor point designed to slide along it. This element is the connector between the track and the operator through a fall arrest system, normally by means of a carabiner.

Depending on the length of the rail, intermediate structural anchors may be needed to reduce the tension on it, while also reducing deflection and stresses at the ends.

Its purpose is to secure operators during work at height with great freedom of movement and to reduce the fall height compared to other safety devices.

What Requirements Must Type D Anchor Devices Meet?

The main requirements these devices must meet are:

The angle of inclination of the rail relative to the horizontal must be ≤ 15º.

All parts and components must withstand twice the expected load (safety factor of 2).

The minimum required obstacle-free height must be respected.

The anchor system must be designed so that it allows movement throughout the entire work area, so that the operator travels the full length of the rail while connected at all times.

Tests of: static strength, and dynamic behavior and strength, as established in the EN 795 D standard.

Depending on the characteristics of the workplace and the demands of the activity to be performed, these devices can be configured:

For one or several operators

With one or several spans

Unidirectional or with changes of direction

Circular or branched

What Types of Tests Must Type D Devices Undergo?

A static test will be performed as follows:

A sample of the anchor rail with its structural anchors will be mounted in the static strength test equipment.

A mobile anchor point will be placed at the statistically least favorable locations.

A test force of 10 kN will be applied to the mobile anchor point, in the direction in which the load will be applied during service of the device.

This force must be maintained for 3 min. The anchor device must withstand the applied force.

Likewise, a dynamic test will be performed in accordance with the UNE EN 795:2012 standard, and the falling mass must be arrested.

If the manufacturer’s instructions allow simultaneous use of the device by two or more people, a specific static test will be performed for that case:

With a force of 10 kN for the first person plus 1 kN for each additional person (for example, for three people the applied force will be 10 kN + 1 kN + 1 kN).

The force must be maintained for 3 min. The anchor must withstand the force.

What Components Make Up a Type D Fall Arrest Anchor Device?

Rigid horizontal rail devices consist of the following components:

End structural anchor: structural anchor located at each end of the rail run.

Intermediate structural anchor: structural anchor that may be required between the end structural anchors.

Anchor rail: rigid profile located between structural anchors to which personal protective equipment can be attached.

Mobile anchor point: additional mobile element mounted on the anchor rail to which personal protective equipment can be attached. These are commonly referred to as “trolleys” or horizontal connection devices in the form of a wheeled carriage that slides with almost no friction through the fall arrest device. It allows the user to move along the rail. It constitutes the mobile anchor point.

End stops: Prevent the mobile anchor point from coming off the rail. Required wherever there is a risk of it leaving through the end of the track.

What Inspections Are Required Once the System Is Installed?

Once the installation of the device is complete and before it is handed over to the user, the installation company must carry out a visual inspection of the system from a safety standpoint and verify that there is no defect or damage, such as damaged supports or fixings.

In addition, rigid horizontal anchor devices must be verified periodically, at least once a year, by an authorized person or company, to ensure proper operation.

When the authorized installer issues a certificate of conformity for the anchor device, they certify that the installation was carried out strictly following the manufacturer’s instructions and the EN 795 standard

During the annual inspection, in addition to the tests mentioned above, visual checks will be made of certain safety-related aspects, which will be, at a minimum, the following:

General condition of the trolley: no corrosion, deformation, or cracks; all parts present; anchor in good condition; wheels sliding properly, etc.

Presence of the identification marking on the rigid horizontal rail device.

Condition of the rail and its accessories: proper fixing, signs of cracks, deformation, and expansion, condition of components (stops, supports, joints…), etc.

Special Considerations When Installing Anchor Devices Equipped with Rigid Horizontal Anchor Lines

When the device is fixed to materials such as steel or wood, it is advisable for a qualified engineer to verify by calculation that the design and installation ensure adequate strength against the force applied during type testing.

When fixing to other materials, it is advisable for the installer to verify the suitability of the materials by testing a sample of the material in question.

This sample should meet the type test requirements set out in the UNE 795:2012 standard. In addition, it is recommended to subject each structural anchor, once it is fixed to the material in question, to an axial tensile force of 5 kN in order to check the soundness of the fixing. The anchor should withstand this force for at least 15 s.

Finally, the installer must make sure that the distance required to arrest a worker’s fall is not greater than the distance available on site.

We hope this article helps you understand, in broad terms, the characteristics, components, requirements, etc. of anchor devices equipped with rigid horizontal anchor lines. If you need more information, do not hesitate to contact us.

In previous posts we have talked about the standard “UNE EN 795/2012.
