In many sectors, safety at height is a critical issue. Among the safety systems available to protect workers and users against falls, we find lifelines. In many cases, choosing the right safety system is not a simple task, since standardized systems don’t always fit every type of project. To choose the right system, we must carry out a technical analysis that meets current regulations, the specific conditions of each project, and the intended type of use.<\/p>\n\n

In today’s post, we are going to guide you through the factors to consider when choosing a lifeline system suited to your project.<\/p>\n\n

What Is a Lifeline?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n

A lifeline<\/a> is an anchor system that allows users to connect via personal protective equipment (PPE), such as harnesses and connectors, ensuring that, in the event of a fall, the fall distance is limited and the consequences are minimized. These safety systems can be temporary or permanent, horizontal <\/a>or vertical<\/a>, rigid or flexible, and must be designed in accordance with the standard that governs them, such as EN 795, among others.<\/p>\n\n

What Steps Should We Follow to Choose the Right Type of Lifeline?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n

To choose the system that best suits the specific conditions of our project, we will follow a series of steps that will lead us to the right type of lifeline.<\/p>\n\n

    \n
  1. Risk assessment: <\/strong>Before selecting a system, we will carry out a preliminary risk assessment that takes into account the working height, the type of structure, environmental conditions and potential corrosion, means of access, and frequency of use.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Determine the type of lifeline:<\/strong> Once the installation environment has been analyzed, we will select the type of lifeline. In this case, we can choose between two types:<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Horizontal lifeline:<\/strong> Mainly installed on roofs, they allow the worker to move safely without having to disconnect along the route, and they come in flexible or rigid versions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. Vertical lifeline:<\/strong> Installed on access ladders, silos, towers, etc. This type of lifeline ensures safety during ascent and descent. We can find cable systems with a fall arrester shuttle or rigid rail systems.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  5. Determine whether the system will be temporary or permanent: <\/strong>Depending on the intended use, we will select one type of system or the other. Temporary systems can be removed after use and are ideal for one-off situations that do not require frequent use, in which case we would opt for a permanent system fixed to the structure of the building or facility.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  6. Number of users:<\/strong> Each lifeline is certified and tested for a maximum number of users. Failing to respect this limit would endanger the safety of the system. You must verify that the system is compatible with the personal protective equipment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  7. Fall clearance assessment:<\/strong> This is a very important aspect. The minimum clearance is the space needed for the user to be stopped before hitting the ground or another obstacle. If we do not have enough distance, we must opt for rigid systems or solutions that minimize the fall height.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  8. Regulations:<\/strong> Every lifeline must comply with the guidelines of the current regulations on fall protection. The most common is EN 795, which sets out the design, manufacturing, and testing criteria for this type of system.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  9. Installation and maintenance:<\/strong> Installation must be carried out by qualified personnel, and a plan of periodic inspections in accordance with the regulations must be included, with a record kept of them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  10. Staff training:<\/strong> Installing these safety systems is of no use if we don’t provide users with proper training. To that end, we will train the people responsible for using them in how to use the system correctly, pre-use checks, rescue and evacuation procedures, and the limitations of the system.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n
