{"id":34408,"date":"2022-09-27T07:06:06","date_gmt":"2022-09-27T05:06:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/desarrollo.ypsossafety.com\/guardrails-requirements-and-specifications-of-en-13374\/"},"modified":"2026-10-29T23:27:05","modified_gmt":"2026-10-29T22:27:05","slug":"guardrails-requirements-and-specifications-of-en-13374","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ypsossafety.com\/en\/guardrails-requirements-and-specifications-of-en-13374\/","title":{"rendered":"Guardrails: Requirements and Specifications of EN-13374"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As we saw in the post on <a href=\"https:\/\/ypsossafety.com\/protecciones-colectivas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">collective protection<\/a>, the most widely used and best known are <a href=\"https:\/\/ypsossafety.com\/barandilla-de-seguridad\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">edge protection guardrails.<\/a> Within these we have two types according to the applicable standard:<\/p>\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" style=\"list-style-type:lower-alpha\">\n<li>Edge protection guardrail. UNE-EN 13374 applies<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Guardrail for means of access. UNE-EN 14122 applies<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today we will talk about the former, explaining the basic requirements they must meet and the specific requirements demanded for each class of guardrail.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Requirements for Edge Protection Guardrails<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>basic requirements<\/strong> define which components the system must include. It must consist of at least a main rail and an intermediate rail or intermediate protection, and it must allow a toe board or kick plate to be attached.<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ypsossafety.com\/ananke-barandillas-de-seguridad\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Main rail. <\/a><\/strong>The distance between the top of the edge protection and the working surface must be at least 1.0 m, measured perpendicular to the working surface.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Toe board or kick plate. <\/strong>The top edge of the toe board must be at least 150 mm above the working surface. The toe board should be designed to avoid gaps between it and the normally horizontal working surface. If there are gaps, a sphere with a diameter of 20 mm must not pass through them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ypsossafety.com\/protecciones-colectivas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Guardrail Classes<\/a><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The UNE-EN 13374 standard sets out a series of <strong>additional requirements<\/strong> depending on the class of guardrail concerned:<\/p>\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Class A Edge Protection System<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The inclination of a class A edge protection system must not deviate from the vertical by more than 15\u00ba.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If an intermediate rail is provided, any opening must be sized so that a sphere 470 mm in diameter cannot pass through the protection. If there is no intermediate rail, or if it is not continuous, the edge protection system must be sized so that a sphere with a diameter of 250 mm cannot pass through it.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When it is not possible to verify the load requirements by calculation, the static load tests specified in the UNE standard, clause 7.4, must be carried out for class A edge protection. In this case, to comply with the standard, specific strength conditions must be met according to the applied load and deflection.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, class B edge protection must withstand the dynamic loads specified in clause 6.<\/p>\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Class C Edge Protection System<\/strong>.<strong> <\/strong><\/h4>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The inclination of the side protection must lie between the vertical (line AC) and the perpendicular to the surface (line BC). Materials must be sufficiently strong and durable to withstand normal working conditions. They must be free of impurities and defects that could affect their satisfactory use.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most common materials are:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Galvanized steel.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Aluminum.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wood.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/ypsossafety.com\/ananke-weight\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Counterweight material.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These must be solid. Granular or fluid materials such as sand or water must not be used.
