{"id":34327,"date":"2023-02-14T11:34:35","date_gmt":"2023-02-14T10:34:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/desarrollo.ypsossafety.com\/risks-on-a-roof-and-how-to-avoid-them\/"},"modified":"2026-10-29T23:26:56","modified_gmt":"2026-10-29T22:26:56","slug":"risks-on-a-roof-and-how-to-avoid-them","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ypsossafety.com\/en\/risks-on-a-roof-and-how-to-avoid-them\/","title":{"rendered":"Risks on a Roof and How to Avoid Them"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When we work on a roof more than two meters above the ground, there are a number of risks we need to consider, assess, and learn how to avoid in order to work safely and with confidence, including <a href=\"https:\/\/ypsossafety.com\/seguridad-instalaciones-fotovoltaicas\/\">risks in photovoltaic systems.<\/a><\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What Is a Roof?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Starting with the basics, a roof is the surface that covers a building or industrial facility to protect it from weather.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Types of Roofs<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are three types of roofs according to their strength, and within each they can be classified by roofing material.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fragile roofs are those that cannot support foot traffic or the storage of materials without installing or using auxiliary means or additional safety elements.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table alignwide is-style-stripes\"><table><thead><tr><th class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\">Roof type<\/th><th class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\">Roofing material<\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\">Fragile<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\">Translucent polyester<br\/>Translucent polycarbonate<br\/>Fiber cement<br\/>Translucent cellular polycarbonate<br\/>Methacrylate roof domes<\/td><\/tr><tr><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\">Light<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\">Trapezoidal or mini-corrugated metal sheet<br\/>Sandwich panel<br\/>Deck roof<br\/>Standing seam<\/td><\/tr><tr><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\">Other<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\">Tile over a compression layer and &#8220;partition walls&#8221;<br\/>Concrete slab and floor slabs<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Information taken from the INSST<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We should clarify that all fragile roofs are light roofs. That is, in a sandwich panel, for example, we can find translucent panels or roof domes.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Roof Work<\/strong><\/h3>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/ypsossafety.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/victor-2PJMDIgK9EA-unsplash-1-1.jpg\" alt=\"industrial building with guardrails and ladders\" class=\"wp-image-10744\" style=\"width:318px;height:397px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ypsossafety.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/victor-2PJMDIgK9EA-unsplash-1-1.jpg 640w, https:\/\/ypsossafety.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/victor-2PJMDIgK9EA-unsplash-1-1-240x300.jpg 240w, https:\/\/ypsossafety.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/victor-2PJMDIgK9EA-unsplash-1-1-600x750.jpg 600w, https:\/\/ypsossafety.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/victor-2PJMDIgK9EA-unsplash-1-1-64x80.jpg 64w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many kinds of work are done from a roof, whether for maintenance, repair, or the installation of different elements.<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Insulation and waterproofing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Repair of leaks or seepage.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Replacement of roof tiles or sheets.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Joint sealing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Removal of asbestos roofing or replacement with other materials.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Installation or maintenance of solar panels.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cleaning of chimneys or gutters.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Repair or replacement of antennas.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Snow removal.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What Risks Exist When Working on a Roof?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Carrying out this type of work involves risks due to the characteristics of the roofing material, the height at which the work is done, or inclement weather.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The main causes of<a href=\"https:\/\/ypsossafety.com\/accidentes-en-altura-y-sistemas-para-evitarlos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> workplace accidents <\/a>on roofs are the following:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Climbing up or down using portable ladders or unprotected fixed ladders.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The roof sheet breaking as the worker passes over it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/ypsossafety.com\/soluciones-de-seguridad-para-los-distintos-tipos-de-lucernarios\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Stepping directly on low-strength roof domes or interior skylights.<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Inclement weather (wind, rain, snow, humidity&#8230;).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Poor condition of the upper surface of the sheet or anchoring area.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These falls from height can be avoided, as long as we use the appropriate safety devices and systems for each job.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Safety Devices on a Roof<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When we work on a roof we must bear in mind that a risk exists, and therefore we must work out how to avoid it. To do so, we must select the <a href=\"https:\/\/ypsossafety.com\/sistemas-seguridad-perimetral\/\">roof perimeter protection <\/a>that best suits our project.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first option is to use<a href=\"https:\/\/ypsossafety.com\/barandillas-de-proteccion-de-borde-requisitos-y-especificaciones-de-la-en13374\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> collective protection<\/a> that guarantees safety across the entire surface where the worker will be, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/ypsossafety.com\/barandilla-de-seguridad\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">safety guardrails. <\/a>With these <a href=\"https:\/\/ypsossafety.com\/barandilla-ananke-caracteristicas-e-instalacion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">safety systems<\/a>, we would prevent falls off the roof.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another option is rigid or cable<a href=\"https:\/\/ypsossafety.com\/linea-de-vida\/\"> lifelines<\/a>. These devices are used with a fall arrest harness and its corresponding accessories (carabiners, connectors, and rope grabs).<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On fragile roofs where we find skylights or roof domes, <a href=\"https:\/\/ypsossafety.com\/pignus-mallas-de-seguridad\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">safety nets,<\/a> such as <a href=\"https:\/\/ypsossafety.com\/pignus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">PIGNUS<\/a>, should be installed.
