Starting from this basis, let us look at what PPE is and what its categories are.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Definition of PPE<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Personal Protective Equipment is, according to Royal Decree 773\/1997, <strong><em>&#8220;any equipment intended to be worn or held by the worker to protect them against one or more risks that may threaten their safety or health, as well as any complement or accessory designed to meet this objective.&#8221;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In other words, PPE is a set of devices, accessories, and clothing designed to be used by a person to provide protection against risks that may threaten their safety and health in the workplace.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The main function of PPE is to reduce or eliminate the worker&#8217;s exposure to hazardous factors present in their work environment.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some common examples of PPE include:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Safety helmets:<\/strong> to protect the head against impacts.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Safety glasses:<\/strong> to protect the eyes against particles, dust, liquids, and radiation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Protective gloves:<\/strong> to protect the hands against cuts, abrasions, chemicals, and so on.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Hearing protection:<\/strong> to reduce exposure to noise.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Safety footwear:<\/strong> to protect the feet against impacts, falls, chemicals, and so on.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Respirators:<\/strong> to protect against airborne particles, chemical vapors, or gases.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Skin protection: <\/strong>such as sunscreen to protect against solar radiation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Protective clothing:<\/strong> torso and abdomen protection such as a vest, or full-body protection such as the safety harness.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>PPE Categories<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PPE can be organized into three categories based on the severity of the work to be performed, following the classification in the new EU Regulation 2016\/425, which repeals Directive 89\/686\/EEC.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Category I<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Equipment intended to protect users from minimal risks at work, including PPE of simple design whose effects can be assessed directly by the user.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Responsibility for the conformity assessment lies with the <a href=\"https:\/\/ypsossafety.com\/\">manufacturer<\/a>, and the involvement of a notified body is not required.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This category exclusively includes the following minimal risks.<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Superficial mechanical injuries.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Contact with weak cleaning agents or prolonged contact with water.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Contact with hot surfaces not exceeding 50 \u00b0C.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Eye injuries caused by sunlight (except when observing the sun).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Atmospheric conditions that are not of an extreme nature.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some examples are:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Gardening gloves<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Simple sunglasses<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reflective vest<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"845\" height=\"321\" src=\"https:\/\/ypsossafety.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/arneses-y-cascos-de-seguridad-845x321-1.jpg\" alt=\"PPE set with harness, helmet, and lanyards\" class=\"wp-image-12299\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ypsossafety.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/arneses-y-cascos-de-seguridad-845x321-1.jpg 845w, https:\/\/ypsossafety.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/arneses-y-cascos-de-seguridad-845x321-1-300x114.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ypsossafety.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/arneses-y-cascos-de-seguridad-845x321-1-768x292.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ypsossafety.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/arneses-y-cascos-de-seguridad-845x321-1-600x228.jpg 600w, https:\/\/ypsossafety.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/arneses-y-cascos-de-seguridad-845x321-1-64x24.jpg 64w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 845px) 100vw, 845px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Category II<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Equipment that does not fall under categories I and III, corresponding to medium risks at work. Products in this category are subject to stricter quality control and manufacturing procedures.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It requires the involvement of a notified body in the conformity assessment process.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> Examples include:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Safety helmets<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ear protectors<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gloves for protection against chemical hazards<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Category III<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Personal Protective Equipment that protects against serious risks at work, such as death or irreversible damage. It involves a notified body at the production control stage, and a full quality assurance system is required.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The risks that Category 3 PPE protects against are:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Substances and mixtures hazardous to health.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Oxygen-deficient atmospheres.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Harmful biological agents.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ionizing radiation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>High-temperature environments with effects comparable to those of an air temperature of at least 100 \u00b0C.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Low-temperature environments with effects comparable to those of an air temperature of \u201350 \u00b0C or less.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Falls from height.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Electric shock and live working.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Drowning.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cuts from hand-held chainsaws.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>High-pressure jets.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bullet or knife wounds.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Harmful noise.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some examples are:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Full chemical protective suits<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Respiratory protective equipment for hazardous environments<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Safety harnesses for work at height<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In summary, PPE is an essential part of workplace safety management, and its proper implementation contributes significantly to preventing accidents and promoting safe and healthy work environments.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The acronym PPE stands for Personal Protective Equipment.
