As we discussed in the previous post on the risks inside an industrial building<\/a>, in the following article we will name the fall protection measures needed to avoid those risks.<\/p>\n\n

Safety Guardrails<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n

Safety guardrails<\/a> are the collective protection par excellence and must be installed in a number of situations to protect workers and prevent falls from elevated heights.<\/p>\n\n

    \n
  1. Elevated platforms:<\/strong> All elevated platforms, such as walkways, balconies, or raised work areas, must be equipped with safety guardrails around them to keep workers from falling.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Stairs<\/a>:<\/strong> Stairs that connect different levels within the industrial building must have guardrails on both sides to provide additional support and prevent falls.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Loading and unloading areas<\/strong>: The areas where materials are loaded and unloaded can be dangerous because of constant activity and the presence of raised edges. It is important to install safety guardrails in these places to protect workers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. Restricted access areas<\/strong>: If there are areas within the industrial building that can only be accessed for maintenance or inspection purposes, it is advisable to install safety guardrails around them to prevent accidental falls.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  5. Machinery platforms:<\/strong> Platforms where machinery or industrial equipment is located can be high-risk areas. Guardrails must be installed around these platforms to protect workers who operate or maintain the machinery.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n

    In summary, safety guardrails, like the rest of the collective protection in civil and industrial construction<\/a>, must be installed anywhere inside an industrial building where there is a potential risk of falls from elevated heights.<\/p>\n\n

    Lifelines<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n

    When we need to access elevated areas where there are no safety guardrails, installing lifelines would be a good option to arrest operators in the event of a fall and allow them to move around safely.<\/p>\n\n

    Some situations in which it may be necessary to install lifelines inside an industrial building:<\/p>\n\n

      \n
    1. Roofs or elevated structures<\/strong>: If workers need to access roofs or elevated structures to carry out maintenance, repair, or inspection tasks, lifelines can be installed to provide a secure anchor point while they work in these areas.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    2. Mobile or lifting platforms:<\/strong> When workers use mobile or lifting platforms to perform tasks at height. Lifelines can be installed on these platforms to provide a secure anchor point in the event of a fall.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    3. Loading and unloading areas at height<\/strong>: If materials are loaded or unloaded from elevated heights, such as shelves, storage platforms, or trucks. Lifelines can be installed to protect workers performing these tasks.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    4. Areas where safety guardrails are not enough: <\/strong>In some situations, safety guardrails may not be enough to protect workers against falls from elevated heights because of the nature of the work or the conditions of the environment. In these cases, lifelines can be installed as an additional safety measure.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n

      These are some of the most important and effective measures for preventing falls when working at height. It is important to carry out a risk assessment to identify the areas that require protection and then install fall arrest systems as needed to ensure workers’ safety.<\/p>\n\n

      In addition, it is important to understand the risks operators are exposed to when working at height inside an industrial building, factory, or warehouse.<\/p>\n\n

      Risks at Height Inside Industrial Buildings<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n

      There are many hazards inside a factory or industrial building that we mentioned in the previous post. In this one, we will focus on the risks of working at height.<\/p>\n\n

      One of the most serious risks we face inside an industrial building is falls from height. Workers can fall from ladders, elevated platforms, scaffolding, or other elevated structures if proper precautions are not taken.<\/p>\n\n

      Collisions<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n

      These falls can result from collisions between workers and objects, machinery, or even other coworkers while working at height, which can cause serious injuries.<\/p>\n\n

      Slips<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n

      Elevated surfaces can become slippery due to the presence of liquids, grease, or other materials, which increases the risk of slips and falls.<\/p>\n\n

      Falling Objects<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n

      Objects can fall from height and strike workers below, causing serious or even fatal injuries.<\/p>\n\n

      Structural Instability<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n

      Elevated structures, such as ladders or scaffolding, can become unstable due to factors such as deterioration, improper assembly, or adverse weather conditions, which increases the risk of falls.<\/p>\n\n

      Unsafe Access<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n

      There are times when operators have to reach machines or objects at height and have no safety systems to help them get there.<\/p>\n
